On these pages, in the past year or so, we have highlighted the spiritual significance of the year 2025. Several articles have been published that shine a light on its importance in the unfolding life of our planet.
It is difficult, if not impossible, to interpret how events will unfold in the coming years in the wake of the General Assembly of the Hierarchy, held each century. So much depends on the state of human consciousness and its response to great conditioning energies that emanate from the innermost levels. But, it is possible, as Alice Bailey suggests, that it will mark the beginning of the first stage of the externalisation of the spiritual Hierarchy of the planet. Whilst these determinations are beyond our understanding and orbit of responsibility, we share a common focus in our service to the unfolding Plan of God. Indeed, in the Aquarian age, the relationship and cooperation between the spiritual and human kingdoms will develop in unimaginable ways. Not since Atlantean times, millions of years ago, has the spiritual Hierarchy walked openly with the human family upon the planet. They were the priest-kings of old and acted as focal points of spiritual energy. They used their understanding of matter and energy to craft beautiful cities and structures that even today are beyond the scope of our finest engineers. In old Atlantis, human beings possessed little mental agility; their minds were primitive, but their emotional nature was developed. Their path to God was through aspiration and devotion. Atlantis ended, as legend informs us, in the great flood, precipitated by the great struggle between the Forces of Light and Darkness.
However, such is the success of the evolutionary process that, over the last 100 years or so, the emergence of the group of world servers has become possible. This group, running into countless millions, transcends the shadows of separateness and selfishness, and in its work lies the hope of the future. Another, and less known, role of this group is to act as a ‘forerunner’ for the return of the World Teacher, the Christ. They help to prepare the way, to change the atmosphere of the planet, and to create the right conditions for his reappearance. They may or may not believe in his return, or even think about it, but they share the same spirit of goodwill and resonate with the values of the Christ. In doing so, they accelerate his return into the outer world.
But there are those who work to hold back human evolution. The forces of materialism will always try to find ways to disrupt and sully the flow of life. Today is no exception, and their hand can be seen in the rise of populism, pitting neighbour against neighbour, community against community, and nation against nation. The recent publication of the US National Security Strategy (November 2025) is a case in point and is grim reading. It undermines the current world order established at the end of the Second World War. However flawed, the international rules-based order offers a diplomatic and legal framework in which nation-states should act within international law and protocols and uphold certain standards of conduct.
To any right-minded person, the surge of selfish nationalism and religious intolerance is alarming. People of goodwill should think clearly about its ramifications at home (wherever that may be) and in the world.
There are many ways that we can offset the tendency of the human family to stray from its intended path, of its journey into an age of right relationships, underpinned by the constructive power of goodwill. Paradoxically, as is quite often the case in the spiritual sciences, “there has never been”, Alice Bailey wrote, “a period in our planetary history, in which opportunity has loomed so large or when so much spiritual light and force could be contacted and utilised by humanity.” This is reassuring, and we can all play a part in helping to release these energies into human consciousness. Most of us would probably acknowledge that we can do more. We may ask ourselves, what is our plan or plans to do so next year? Each in our own way, let us work towards a better world, knowing that there are countless hundreds of thousands, if not millions, doing likewise. All efforts to do so, however small, accumulate and are instrumental in building a new world.
