Across a fractured landscape, a golden thread runs through the world’s religious scriptures, weaving a common core of unity. Although the venerable truths at their heart are often overlooked by traditional orthodoxy, visionary thinkers and philosophers across the centuries have always alluded to this shared lineage of religious thought. This unity is far more than an abstract concept; it represents a profound reality capable of guiding us towards a more harmonious existence.
Highlighting this unity, Bhagavan Das, a 19th-century Theosophist and academic, wrote: “There is only One Eternal Truth…. New generations are born from old, new nations grow out of colonies from old, new lamps are lighted from old, but the Life, the Light, the Might, which is only embodied in and expressed by the ever-changing forms, is beyond them all, is common to them all, is originated by none of them, but originates them all.”
If there is a golden thread that binds together the scriptures of the major world religions, it is even more visible in their inner, or esoteric, teachings: Christian mysticism, Jewish Kabbalah, Islamic Sufism, the Hindu Upanishads, and esoteric Buddhism.
What would the great initiate-priests, such as the Christ, Moses, the Buddha, and Muhammad think of today’s distorted and suffocating mindsets among many religious practitioners? Truth may be sullied in some minds, but it remains unsullied at the source.
All religious scriptures were given to the world to enhance human development, promote a religious aspiration towards God, and recognise our common humanity. Anything that runs contrary to these principles is a distortion of these ageless truths.
In the Middle East, we witness in horror and disbelief the violent convergence of religious fundamentalism. The three Abrahamic religions–Christianity, Judaism, and Islam-share a common heritage and have given much to the world in spiritual and philosophical thought, scientific achievement, and culture. Yet today, elements within them are embarked on a modern-day ‘crusade’, locked in combat equal in ferocity to its counterparts in centuries gone by.
However, there are individuals and organisations, both within and outside religious communities, dedicated to interfaith dialogue, finding common ground, sowing the seeds of inclusiveness and tolerance, and sharing ideas. These initiatives tend to go unnoticed in the mainstream media, but they are building bridges and fostering positive connections among faiths.
The signature of God flows through all the major world religions. Each revelation of truth was appropriate for its age and the humanity at that time. In the last 2000 years, remarkable progress has been made in human thinking, creativity, social values, and culture.
In some circles, there is a quiet convergence of thought in religion, science, and philosophy. In the last century, Alice Bailey observed: “we are nearing a marvellous synthesis of thought of the world; we are advancing towards that period when science and religion will come to the help of each other, and when philosophy will add its quota to the understanding of truth.”
Esoteric philosophy too, most notably, in the last century or so, has enriched human thinking and further revealed the golden thread that links religion with religion, and God with humanity. The writings of Alice Bailey, Helena Blavatsky, and Helena Roerich have contributed to the quest of humanity for truth and an understanding of the intrinsic interrelationship of life.
Out of this melting pot of ideas, religious discussion, and scientific and philosophical analysis and debate, a new approach to God will emerge. It will weave a golden thread through these great lines of thought, synthesising their sacred essence and joining the many dots that have baffled and perplexed minds throughout the ages.
