Some Thoughts on Capricorn

Creating a channel for the precipitation of divine light

Through Sagittarius, one of the intuitive signs, we learn that only the “arrow of the intuition” will suffice to carry the seeker to the mount of initiation. This is the goal of Capricorn, the sign of conclusion for which the mountaintop is the symbol. Mountains are frequently associated with moments of spiritual transcendence, as was depicted in the life of Christ, who experienced both the Transfiguration and the Crucifixion on the summit of a mountain or hill, before descending once more to daily life to demonstrate the effects of what he had experienced. His journey began, though, with his birth in a cave, and this span of experience from cave to mountaintop and back to level earth documents the path of initiation. This reversal is expressed in the keynote of Capricorn: Lost am I in light supernal, yet on that light I turn my back.

Capricorn is a sign of both conclusion and new beginnings; of the densest, most concrete material realm and of the ultimate triumph of pure spirit. There is a profound spiritual truth in this recognition, and it’s one that is increasingly dawning on human consciousness as we enter a new age and a new pattern of energies. A deeply esoteric concept is that “When the light of the seven Rays is blended with that of the seventh Ray, then light supernal can be known.” This will result, we’re told, in the highest aspect of divine light penetrating down into the physical plane, an event that will only become possible when the energy of the seventh Ray, which governs the fusion of spirit with matter, becomes active and when the Sun is in Aquarius. Esoteric teaching foresees that this pattern of relationships is rapidly approaching and that its objective is to bring about illumination and the establishing of order upon the Earth. The result will be the creation of a channel for the precipitation of “light supernal” into the mental, emotional and etheric-physical planes of Earth, and “thus will be brought about the new civilization and the new world order”, Alice Bailey wrote.

Light supernal lies beyond the grasp of the human mind, for it is a state of being rather than of knowing. “It is that central Life or Energy which holds hid within itself the purpose and the plan towards which all Being tends….What that directive force may be, what is the secret of Being Itself, is only revealed during the more advanced initiations”, the writings of Alice Bailey tell us. But an account of the experience of the psychiatrist and author of Cosmic Consciousness, R.M. Bucke, might provide some glimmer of insight: Late one evening when his mind was relaxed, he wrote, and “in a state of quiet…,all at once, without warning of any kind, I found myself wrapped in a flame-colored cloud. For an instant I thought of fire…the next, I knew that the fire was within myself…I did not merely come to believe, but I saw that the universe is not composed of dead matter, but is, on the contrary, a living Presence; I became conscious in myself of eternal life. It was not a conviction that I would have eternal life, but…that I possessed eternal life then…that the cosmic order for the good of each and all is in the long run absolutely certain.”

His experience seems to echo esoteric teaching, which tells us that Light supernal reveals that the cosmos is a state of Being, a living Presence which cannot be observed but only experienced by entry or absorption into it. While this distant goal might seem to lie far ahead, it is the destiny towards which all humanity is headed and why this moment in planetary history holds such great promise. “Because humanity has passed through a great cleansing process and because in the world today there are many aspirants and disciples, the effect of these penetrating energies is that they inevitably will evoke response”, we are assured. “When a human crisis and a spiritual crisis coincide, there comes one of the major periods of opportunity and decision in general human affairs; hence the extreme gravity of the present moment”, Alice Bailey wrote. These thoughts should help us to understand the significance of the service that the worldwide meditation group can contribute towards strengthening the channel of precipitation for the new inpouring energies. Let us work in meditation.
