Each month at the time of the full moon, we consider one of the twelve constellations which are a major transmitter of streams of energy coming from still higher Sources. Of the twelve, Gemini, Taurus, and Aries are three conditioning signs or energies which lie behind manifestation, we’re told in the writings of Alice Bailey. Their effect is subjective and foundational, preparing for the energies which pour into the world through the nine remaining signs.
The subtlety of the Gemini experience is most keenly recognized in the dualism of this sign, whose symbol is depicted by the two poles known to astronomers as Castor and Pollex, “the twins”. The mystery of Gemini, Alice Bailey wrote, “is concerned with the secret of the response which should and eventually will exist between the two poles—soul and form—and between the mortal self or personality and the immortal self or soul”. Gemini gives the sense of the dual nature of the human being—of being both human and divine. Perhaps this awareness underlay the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa’s comment: “I’m beginning to know myself. I don’t exist. I’m in the gap between what I’d like to be and what others have made of me….That’s me. Period.” The poignancy of his insight underscores the duality of the human experience, which the keynote for Gemini expresses: I recognize my other self, and in the waning of that self I grow and glow.
The gap between what we are and what we hope to become compels the seeker in Gemini to resolve apparent disparities in his/her own nature and in the world. It’s a gap that can only be bridged by love. Love is the unifying factor between the pairs of opposites, as is confirmed in the Bailey writings: “Love forms with each of the pairs of opposites in the Zodiac a third factor…and thus forms, with them, certain great zodiacal Triangles.” This is accomplished through “the resolution of duality into a fluid synthesis…by preserving the magnetic interplay between them, keeping them fluid in their relations….” How urgently this unifying power is needed in the world today, when the pairs of opposites seem to generate only conflict, and the crystallization of the opposing forces has reached a level that seems irreconcilable.
It’s not helpful to underestimate the depth of anger and mistrust that have created the cleavage, but the power of love to resolve it must also not be underestimated. Love guards the mystery of duality, the esoteric teaching tells us. In pondering on this, it becomes apparent that duality—particularly the fundamental duality between spirit and matter—should be seen not as a hindrance but rather as a preparatory and even necessary condition for achieving ultimate synthesis: that ineffable Wholeness which underlies all manifestation. The Law of Attraction is a fundamental law of the Cosmos. This suggests that the forces of evolution lead towards reconciliation. Sooner or later, opposing polarities must attract—either through the blunt trauma created by the collision of unyielding conflicting forces, or through the reconciliation of differences: not by ignoring them but by finding a transcendent point of synthesis. This is the power of the Christ principle, of the soul—the third factor uniting spirit and matter. Seen in this light, perhaps the pain caused by the tension of the present times is an opportunity for humanity to sense this possibility more clearly and to strive towards it. If we don’t know how to do this, perhaps beginning with an attitude of silence and of deep listening—to “the other side”, to the incomprehensible and utterly foreign perspective—is a place to start?
The writings of Alice Bailey tell us that the underlying Love of Deity, of God, reaches our solar system primarily through Gemini. At the moment of the full moon of Gemini, when the Sun, symbolic of the soul, approaches its zenith in the northern hemisphere, divine Love pours into the world. Let us work in meditation to create a channel of distribution for that enormous power.
