Thoughts on Aries

Creation as an act of boldness

The transition from Pisces to Aries, the Omega and Alpha points of the zodiac, marks the beginning of a new spiritual year and a new cycle of energy. “The secret of Aries is the secret of beginnings, of cycles and of emerging opportunity”, the writings of Alice Bailey say. The use of the word “secret” is interesting, for it seems to cast light on the well known insight of the German playwright and thinker Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: “Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.”

The will to achieve is fundamentally an act of creation. We might think of creativity as the province of the artist, but true creativity is an act of the mind. This realization lay behind the Apostle Paul’s dictum, “Be ye therefore transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). The default position of the human mind seems to rely upon the “prevailing wisdom” of one’s family and community—to perceive the surrounding environment through the prism of the values and expectations that one has been taught since childhood. Learning to break free of ingrained concepts—not necessarily to reject them but to gain enough distance to achieve a fresh perspective—is a huge mental challenge, but a necessary one in this transitional era if humanity is to create a new, more inclusive, just, and peaceful world for all.

Every person of goodwill aspires to such a world, but to create it we must meet the challenge of Aries’ keynote: I come forth and from the plane of mind, I rule. When we can cease being the captive of our thoughts and desires, we can become their creator and director. To do this, Alice Bailey wrote that our first aim should be to learn to think clearly for ourselves, beginning by examining what we actually think and why we think it. We must learn to identify our most cherished opinions and theories by asking ourselves, do I really know this to be true or just believe/hope/suspect that it is? We can gauge the validity of our ideas by asking, do they serve the good of the whole or only my personal needs or those of my community?

Esoteric teaching says that “the initiate knows because he works”. This was Christ’s suggestion when he told His disciples that if they wanted to know the doctrine they must carry out God’s will. There is a divine intention for our world, but it cannot be imposed. It must be registered and implemented by human minds. And those who are most responsive to spiritual values, who can think freely and in terms of the good of the whole, have the task of “modifying, qualifying, and adapting the divine plan.” The writings of Alice Bailey say that human planning and thinking, in terms of the future, are the first indications in human history of the emergence of the will aspect. Thus, we can take hope in the many conferences and international councils which have increased throughout the world since the end of the second phase of the World War.

Pondering on Newton’s third law, which states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, can also help to reveal the underlying causes behind the increasing threats to democracies as well as the recent resurgence of dictators and autocrats in a number of nations throughout the world. We are still within a phase of trial and error—perhaps all of history follows this same cycle—but slowly humanity seems to be recognizing the need for coordinated group effort to solve the most fundamental world problems. This is how great changes must come about: through the choices made by human minds. In this recognition, the flow of spiritual energy from Pisces, the planetary Medium and Mediator, to Aries, the Initiator and Creator, becomes clarified.

It’s been said that the great changes in history have come about because some people began, where they were, to live in a new way. If we add to this “and to think in a new way”, each of us can be part of this change, and group meditation at the time of the full moon is a way to mobilize our collective energies.
