Thoughts on Gemini

The two must become the One

Gemini is the sign of the messenger, both traditionally via Mercury and esoterically through the role of Avatars. This is a term frequently expropriated by popular culture, but the deep spiritual significance of an Avatar is demonstrated in the role of a Divine Messenger. These Avatars are the revealers of new truths who serve, on their highest level, as channels for the transmission of a divine quality. Of these, the Buddha and the Christ are supreme examples. The Buddha, through his teaching, transmitted the energy of Light, and the Christ, through his very presence, anchored on Earth the quality of divine Love.

Esoteric teaching affirms that the underlying love of Deity reaches our solar system primarily through Gemini, making it apparent that love underlies the entire universe. Gemini is also the major symbol of duality in the zodiac and the keynote for Gemini expresses the tension inherent in duality: I recognize my other self and in the waning of that self, I grow and glow. The self (small s) is the outer form, the personality, and anyone who seeks to tread the spiritual path becomes well acquainted with the fundamental pair of opposites which constitute the human being prior to full spiritual realization—the struggle between the self, the personality, and the soul. This condition, we’re told, is uniquely a phase of spiritual evolution, for the spiritually unawakened man is unified in his nature, completely focused in the needs of the physical body for food, water, air, and procreation, untroubled by spiritual aspirations. Only when the individual begins to develop a glimmer of spiritual awareness does the dichotomy between what one is and what one should be become apparent. This poignant recognition was expressed by the Apostle Paul when he wrote, “For the good that I would do I do not; but the evil which I would not, that I do.”

Interestingly, duality is the generator of a fundamental spiritual principle: the Principle of Conflict. Esoteric teaching says that conflict is latent in every atom of substance and it has a close connection with the path of discipleship, for it stimulates the mobilizing energy of the will to struggle, to achieve liberation. Gemini resolves conflict by acting as the intermediary between the pairs of opposites by creating a third factor. Through the resolution of the dualities into a fluid synthesis, a magnetic interplay between the pairs of opposites is preserved which permits the emergence of a transcendent unity, “for the two must become the One”, we’re told. In this struggle the poet Kabir offered some useful guidance: “Behold but One in all things; it is the second that leads you astray.”

Christ, who is said to have made “in himself one new man”, is the supreme embodiment of humanity’s destiny, for the work of each human being, Alice Bailey wrote, is the development of the power to act as the transmitter of energies from greater lives than one’s own, and to become a transmuting, mediating agency in the great Chain of Being. “Through the divine centre of intelligent activity which we call humanity, the fourth kingdom in nature will eventually act as the mediating principle to all the three lower kingdoms,” Alice Bailey wrote. “Humanity is the divine Messenger to the world of form, bringing light and life to other divine manifestations and of this all divine world Saviours are the eternal symbols”, she said. “Mercury, the Messenger of the Gods, carries to humanity a certain type of force and this precipitates a point of crisis; it brings about the next great revolution which will lead mankind on to new experience, and to the revelation of the divinity which it is the destiny of man to reveal.”

The path towards this awesome goal is strengthened through group meditation, and the contribution of each one of us, no matter how small it might seem, is vitally needed.
